Plot synopsis:
Based on the clasic story b J.M. Barrie about the boy who "never grows" up and his band of Lost Boys ("They are well named"). Peter (Sumpter) visits the Darling family abd is encapulated with Wendy Darling (Hurd-Wood) taking her (And reluctantly her brothers) to his Never Never land where he is engaged in his never-ending war against notorious pirate captain Hook (Isaacs in his dual role as Hook and Mr Darling). A Place with blood thirsty pirates and to adults to rule and boss you around and ideal for Wensy and her brothers, epecially Wendy crave - stories of adventure and action - and pirates! But it is all make believe, isn't it?
Thoughts:
With roots in the theatre as well where the male lPan lead was usually played by a female, In P J Hohans'version we have young Jeremy Sumpter, who in my eyes is a perfect Pan. With exactly the right exuberance and charm, and yet believability in the role. Some may knock his acting however there'#s no deying that his on-screen chemistry with Hurd-Wood as Wendy is electric, just as Jeremy Isaacs is also perfect in the dual role of Mr darling and Hook, especially with his sene as the former where he has to "mingle" with his higher up work bosses" to try and get more ahead at his work. Equally as electric is how Sumpter and isaacs bounce of each other in there repective Pan/Hook roles.
Even the effects, from this era - weren't toooo bad from flying through the air/universe to bouncing around in the clouds. Special mention should also be given to Ludivine Sagnier as Tink (Tinkerbell) , a french actress with what she did with her actions and facial exprressions as the mischievious Tink. Perhaps Wendy's brothers and Lost Boys are maybe a bit wooden in the acting department, although the best of the best could be Theodore Chester as Slightly. The soundtrack is good as well from the opening music to moments of adventure.
For me as someone who Didn't enoy Speilberg's Hook, the disney animated version and never really of a fan of the actually story as a whole, this turned me around. The added simple of complexities also of the "hidden kiss" and Wendy's start into womanhood being told to grow up and spend less time wrestling around with her brothers mirroring Pan's own mortality and becoming a man outside of Never Never land are very well interwoven. It's very quotable and has a great balance of fun and sadness, action and adventure.
So do you believe in faires?
