I feel like this one isn't talked about enough.
After the "Nightmare" franchise had started to get a bit stale (The Dream Child, Freddy's Dead), the franchise needed a fresh invigoration and it took original creator Wes Craven to do that.
Doing something very different and meta, Craven created a film in a film returning Robert England (Freddy) with Heather Lagenkamp (Nancy), but with a twist this was heather playing Heather an ctress who once was the leady lady in a horror film back in the 80's, now married to s special effects guy in the industry with a young son who is starting to dream of Freddy. It also reuntites heather with John Saxon as well! Who played her on screen father in the original.
It's a very fresh take, with plenty of nods as well, slightly updating the Freddy look and beiong very clever with the running comparisons between the reality and the film being made.
