"Nature's first green is gold, / Her hardest hue to hold. / Her early leaf's a flower, / But only so an hour. / Then leaf subsides to leaf, / So Eden sank to grief. / So dawn goes down to day, / Nothing gold can stay."
The Outsiders, is based on a novel by S E Hinton. Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1965 it follows 14 year old Ponyboy Curtis his family and friends in the more poorer part of the area where the lower class are known as "The Greasers" and the more rich well to do side of town are known as "The Soc". When Ponyboy and his best friend Johnny Cade get into a scuffle with some Soc, things take a dark turn forcing the two to flee town fearing they will be wanted by the police, only t end up becoming heros in the process.
This film boasts and impressive cast with the original "Brat Pack" featuring Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe with newcomber Thomas C Howell in the title role as Ponyboy Curtis. It also of course stars Ralph "Karate Kid" Macchio, Diane Lane an in a very early role - Tom Cruise.
Like most people my age i learned of this in secondary school (high school) where we watched the movie and also went through the book, I fell in love with it there and then and it's always stuck a place in my heart ever since many many years later. If you can, PLEASE do not watch the extended version, Yes it has the extra scenes and full ending which are obviously better, however it also dubs 60's classic tunes over certain parts, often at inappropriate moments where it drowns out the actors' voices almost. Which was uneeded and unwelcome.
I would love a restored version of this with the extras and true ending but without all the dubbed over music of the time at inappropriate moments drowning out the actors.
Did you ever see this film or learn about it in school like I did?
