Anyone else seen this film? Austrailian, be pretty suprised if anyone has as it was a ceommercial flop in it's native country and worldwide; but has become a little bit of a cult film for me after first seeing it in my mid-teens a few years after it's release on TV. It's a bit of a sentimental guilty pleasure for me, watched it for the fiurst time again after a couple of deceades the other night after seeing it on Amazon Prime and it hasn't lost it's charm!
Celia, (Aussie child actress Rebecca Smart) is an 8 going on 9 year old, all she wants is to be happy and have a pet bunny, not helped by class meanie Stephanie. Set in the late 1950's of Austrailia when the thread of 'The Reds" and communism is still rife, Celia has a very dark and over-active imagination. Not helped by her favourite kid's book (Being read at school) about blue skinned-creatures running around at night in the dark feeding her over active imagination.
At the beginning of the film her beloved granny dies (Who may or may not have some communist ideals), adding to the fears of the dark, death, and blue skinned things running around at night. Let alone her strict father. All is not lost though when a new family moves next door to Celia and as well as bonding with their three kids also bonds heavily with the mom, Alice. All until Celia accidently brings home a paper areoplane her and Alice made during Alice having "friends over" I.E. a meeting over the "Reds" and her father finds it suspecting their new neighbours are in fact communists.
Things take a dark turn but this film is a mix of frienship, fears (Celia's, over political beliefs), death, love, the goverments anti-rabbit agender (Due to spreading miximatosis, this was the 50's after all) to Celia's love/hate relationship with her father. You'll find this in the horror section, but i've personally never seen it as such. Moreover a dark drama with horror-esq elements.
