Haven't seen this since I was 11, many, many eons ago... First time I saw it I had to watch it in art class, so I gave it another go as an adult for the first time. (Although I prever the musical Oliver!)
I forgot about some of the cinematography, especially at the beginning which is quite stunning with the storm , the tree branch and river in the wind. The late Sir Alex Guinness does such a good job as Fagan, you forget it's is Sir Alex at times. The boy - John Howard Davies as Oliver is okay, a bit too softly spoken - but then Oliver is an innocent. I do feel in places it could've done with some additional dialogue and not presume everyknows the story.
I do love the bit where Oliver goes wild though, "You gave him too much meat! This wouldn't have happened if you'd kept him on a diet of gruel!" - Mr. Bumble. Robert Newton also leaves quite an impression as Bill Sykes. Overall I liked it and enjoyed seeing it again.
